Without Planning Permission

In the early incarnation of this project, presented at Warwick Arts Centre and elsewhere, the spectators discovered a set of around 16 tables in the space. By sitting at a table, a spectator triggered a performance. A performer in character would come to the table and start relating to the spectator as if they had a prior relationship. The actor would bring a dilemma, a problem or a story. Spectators could choose to engage with the character, to become improvisers themselves, or simply observe. Spectators could also move freely between the tables, discovering at each a new location and a new story. They always had the option of intervening and altering the line of direction being pursued by the character in front of them.

In the present development of the structure, the show links all the table characters in the same story. For example, at the first table is Bob. At the second is Sue, who is the sister, lover, teacher or rival of Bob. Additionally, the spectators understand that they too have something in common; they are all residents of the same estate or village.

In this version of WPP, the show passes through a series of stages. First the spectators see a film about life on the estate, then they interact at the tables with the characters, then a residents meeting is called at which the spectators must make some crucial decisions about issues affecting their estate.

In the final section, the actors improvise scenes exploring the outcomes of these decisions.

Fluxx has two other versions of this format in development; the first is for young people where the spectators are all members of the same club, the second concerns bioethics and issues of disability and pregnancy termination.

The show is currently planned to tour the UK within late 2011 and 2012. Please contact for more details via admin@fluxx.co.uk
